Fire pit won’t light?

Outdoor ignition parts live in the rain, so they wear faster than anything inside the house. A cracked igniter, a failed flame sensor, or a module that has taken on water will stop the fire from lighting or shut it off after a few seconds.

Burner, valve, and flame problems.

A low or uneven flame usually means a clogged or rusted burner, a failing valve, or a propane regulator that is not delivering enough gas. We inspect the whole gas train before recommending parts.

Smell gas at the fire pit?

A gas smell at the fire pit means a leak at a fitting, the valve, or the line. Shut the gas off at the key valve, do not light it, and have it checked. Leaks are fixed by our gas leak repair service, and regular maintenance heads off most breakdowns.

Seasonal gas fire pit maintenance.

Northwest rain, falling leaves and spiders are hard on outdoor burners. Insects nest in burner ports and orifices, and debris settles under the media. Our fire pit maintenance clears it out, refreshes the media and tests the ignition, so the fire pit lights on the first try all season.

Fire pit repair and maintenance questions.

Short answers to what homeowners ask us before the first site visit.

Question 1 of 7

Why won’t my gas fire pit light?

The usual causes are a worn or wet igniter, a failed thermocouple or flame sensor, running out of propane, a closed valve, or a burner blocked by debris or insect nests. We test each before replacing parts.

Question 2 of 7

Why does my fire pit light and then go out?

That is usually the flame sensor or thermocouple. If it does not sense the flame, the valve shuts off the gas as a safety measure. Water in the burner pan can cause it too.

Question 3 of 7

Why is my fire pit flame low or uneven?

Clogged burner ports, a rusted burner, a failing regulator, or media piled too deep over the burner. On propane fire pits, a regulator that has gone into safety lockout is common.

Question 4 of 7

Do you repair fire pits you did not install?

Yes. We repair most gas fire pits, fire tables, and fire bowls, including pre-fabricated units and custom builds by other contractors.

Question 5 of 7

Can a fire pit burner be replaced without rebuilding the fire pit?

In most cases, yes. We match a new burner and pan to the existing opening and reuse the gas connection when it is in good shape.

Question 6 of 7

How often does a gas fire pit need maintenance?

Once a year at a minimum, usually as a spring startup. Fire pits that sit uncovered through the winter or get heavy use benefit from a fall maintenance visit too.

Question 7 of 7

How do I winterize a gas fire pit?

Turn the gas off at the key valve or tank, let the burner dry, and cover it so rain does not fill the pan. Our winterizing maintenance handles the shutdown, the cover fitting, and a check of the drainage.
