Pilot light and ignition repair.

Most no-heat calls come down to the pilot or the ignition. A worn thermocouple or thermopile, a dirty pilot, or a failed spark igniter will keep the fireplace from lighting or staying lit. We test each part before we replace anything.

Gas valve, remote, and blower repair.

If the pilot lights but the burner will not come on, or the flame is weak, the problem is often in the gas controls. We check the gas pressure at the valve and troubleshoot the remote and wall switch before recommending a replacement.

Glass, burner, and flame problems.

Sooting, a yellow or lazy flame, and odd flame patterns usually point to a misplaced log, a dirty or damaged burner, or an air shutter out of adjustment. Cracked glass needs replacing before the fireplace is used again, because the glass is part of the sealed combustion system.

Vent pipe, liner, and carbon monoxide problems.

Damaged vent pipe, a failed termination cap, or a liner that has come apart can let exhaust into the house. If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, get everyone out and call 911 first. Once it is safe, we find and fix the cause.

Gas fireplace repair and maintenance questions.

Short answers to what homeowners ask us before the first site visit.

Question 1 of 7

Why won’t my gas fireplace pilot stay lit?

The most common cause is a worn or dirty thermocouple or thermopile, the part that tells the gas valve the pilot is lit. A weak or dirty pilot flame, a draft, or low gas pressure can do the same thing. We test each one before replacing parts.

Question 2 of 7

Why does my pilot light but the fireplace won’t turn on?

Usually a weak thermopile, a bad wall switch or remote receiver, or a failing gas valve. It is a quick test with a meter, so we can tell you which before quoting the repair.

Question 3 of 7

How much does gas fireplace repair cost?

It depends on the part. Cleaning and adjusting a pilot is a small job, while a new gas valve or control module costs more. We diagnose first and quote the repair before we do the work.

Question 4 of 7

Do you repair gas fireplaces you did not install?

Yes. We repair most major gas fireplace and insert brands, including older units and ones you inherited with the house.

Question 5 of 7

Is it safe to use my fireplace with cracked glass?

No. The glass is part of the sealed combustion system that keeps exhaust out of the room. Turn the fireplace off and leave it off until the glass is replaced.

Question 6 of 7

How often does a gas fireplace need maintenance?

Once a year for most fireplaces, ideally in late summer or early fall before you start using it. Fireplaces that run every day through the winter benefit from the same schedule.

Question 7 of 7

Should I turn off my pilot light in the summer?

It can save gas and keep spiders and insects out of the pilot. If you turn it off, have it relit and checked in the fall. Our spring shutdown and fall startup maintenance handles both.
